The European University Institute (EUI) was founded in 1972 by the original Member States of the European Community, now the European Union, in order to provide advanced academic training for PhD students and to promote research at the highest level. Today the EUI offers one of the world largest and most distinguished doctoral and postdoctoral programmes in the social sciences. It hosts an international community of over 1000 scholars from more than 60 countries and, as such, it offers a unique, truly interdisciplinary and international research environment. Both basic and applied research in History, Law, Economics, and Political and Social Sciences is done in the departments and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS).
