The Middle East Research Institute (MERI) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation based in Erbil, Iraq. It has been ranked for the past three consecutive years as Iraq’s leading policy research and think tank and among the top 15 percent in the Middle East and Norther African countries.

MERI’s objective is to contribute to a better understanding of the Middle East by conducting research fieldwork in the wider region in general and in Iraq in particular. In addition, the Institute takes the extra mile in using its analysis of political and socioeconomic phenomena in order to deliver practical policy recommendations for a number of unresolved issues.

MERI seeks constructive engagement with local, national and international stakeholders to promote its policy recommendations, and engages the public by communicating its output through media outlets, seminars and expert conferences.

MERI is currently a partner in two EU-funded (Horizon 2020) research projects (EUNPACK and FEUTURE); a Norwegian Research Council funded project (HYRES) and it has previously collaborated and/or delivered research programmes on stabilisation, minorities, reconciliation and legitimacy for international funding bodies, including USIP, UNDP, NWO & others.
